Things To Do In Omaha With Young Children: Everyday Spots That Feel Magical

Although I have always called Omaha home, it has a way of transforming depending on the season of life you’re in. As a child, it felt like a safe, small town where bikes and sidewalks carried me to friends’ houses. In my twenties, it became a bustling city of art, coffee shops, and endless discovery.

And then I became a mom. Suddenly Omaha revealed itself all over again — this time through the wide eyes of my little ones.

Ordinary Omaha Places Become Magical

What once felt ordinary became magical: storytime at the library, stroller walks through Lauritzen Gardens, a slow wander across Gene Leahy Mall’s prairie paths. With a toddler in tow, even a duck pond or a neighborhood park felt like an adventure.

It didn’t take long to realize that raising young children here meant I was constantly asking, “What should we do today?” Some days called for big outings, but often the most memorable moments came from the simplest places: watching butterflies at Heron Haven, listening to birds in our backyard, or drying grass we found along the trails at Two Rivers State Recreation Area.

The Rhythm Of The Seasons In Nebraska

I also noticed how much rhythm the seasons bring to family life.

  • Winter called us to cozy reading nooks and kitchen baking days.
  • Spring meant puddle stomping and seed planting.
  • Summer brimmed with picnics, parades, and strawberry picking.
  • Fall invited apple tasting, leaf collecting, and visits to the pumpkin patch.

The more I leaned into those natural rhythms, the more connected and joyful our days felt.

Why I Created Wilder Seasons

That’s what inspired me to create Wilder Seasons: Omaha Edition — a yearlong family activity guide designed to help parents notice and celebrate the magic of raising little ones here. The book offers 52 weeks of seasonal activities, local outings, recipes, songs, and book pairings, all connected to developmental milestones for ages 0–7.

It’s not about adding more to your plate, but about finding wonder in what’s already around us.

A Peek Inside: Trains & Tracks

One of my favorite weeks is Trains & Tracks, thanks to my oldest’s current obsession. The outing suggestion is to visit Lauritzen Gardens’ Railroad Garden, Kenefick Park or the train exhibits at The Durham Museum.

The activities are simple — building trains from blocks, painting with toy wheels, dancing like locomotives — yet they invite creativity, movement, and connection. Pair it with a snack (a train-track veggie tray), a classic song (“Down by the Station”), and a bedtime story (“Steam Train, Dream Train”), and suddenly you’ve created a memory anchored in both play and place.

Discovering Omaha All Over Again

Through the process of writing “Wilder Seasons,” I learned that Omaha is overflowing with places where toddlers can thrive. It isn’t always about the biggest attractions — sometimes it’s about the hidden gems or the everyday spots we pass by without noticing. When seen through a child’s eyes, they become something extraordinary.

Because childhood seasons are fleeting — but Omaha has a year’s worth of wonder waiting to be discovered.
