There are “smoothies” and then there are smoothies.
The difference?

Ingredients.
Smoothies should have whole food, real ingredients, and no added sugar – the fruit’s enough, amiright?
Enter Smoothie King. It’s a new-to-Omaha franchise on a mission to cut the unnecessary added sugars and stick to whole food ingredients.
I’ll admit, I’m a make-my-own kind of smoothie person. I’ve gotta be in control of the ingredients.
But Smoothie King may just persuade me to branch out.
The ingredient list is simple there. Their number smoothie, Angel Food, consists of bananas and strawberries. Done.
I joined fellow bloggers Erin at Her Heartland Soul, Erin at Home With The Boys, Lisa at The Walking Tourists, Liz at LPO Beauty and Lisa at Midwest Mammas in a taste testing recently.
Hosted by Molly, who owns the franchise we visited, we learned about the company’s culture and some fun facts.
The taste test

We tried eight flavors:
Angel Food (banana and strawberry) – Smoothie King’s No. 1 seller
Mangofest (orange, mango and pineapple)
Lemon Twist Strawberry (strawberry, lemon and papaya – made skinny)
Almond Mocha High Protein (coffee) – Think meal replacement for breakfast
Chocolate Gladiator with Peanut Butter and Banana (choose two fruits or peanut butter, and also either chocolate, strawberry or vanilla protein)
Berry Carrot Dream (carrots, orange, apple, strawberry and banana)
Pineapple Surf (pineapple, strawberry and kiwi)
The Hulk Vanilla (butter pecan ice cream and banana) – High caloric, which, of course, means it tastes divine
** Actually, ninth one was added after we tried the ones from above, but it had such a papaya flavor that I blocked it out of memory. Others really enjoyed it, but I’m a papaya-phobe.
The verdict
Turns out, I’m a vanilla kind of girl so the big winner was The Hulk Vanilla.
Or maybe I’m just an ice cream girl.
Runner up goes to Mangofest. For the real fruity stuff, Mangofest ranks up there as the tastiest, followed closely by Angel Food.
What else to know
Small is not really small here! It’s 20 ounces of smoothie goodness.
You can order your kids a 12 oz kids cup, with kid-pleasing flavor combos like the Apple Kiwi Bunga. It can be our little secret that it has kale in it.
Bonus
1. Smoothie King has a drive-thru. Having slugged my fair share of baby carseats around in and out of places in Omaha, only to advance to wrangling two runners, I love a place that lets me stay in the car to get my business done.
2. Smoothie King has a loyalty program that’ll get you a free smoothie and discounts year-round, and they also have an app you can download to your phone making it easy to accrue points for FREE smoothies. Check both out if you’re a smoothie addict.
