A lot of outdoorsy families have their go-to cabin each summer. We have a favorite at Mahoney State Park, for instance. But, I love a change of scenery so I’ve started looking into other great cabins within about two hours of Omaha. If you’re looking for a weekend getaway in nature, check out these cabins!
Awesome Cabins Near Omaha
You don't have to drive too far to escape the city. Here are some of my top recommendations for cabins within driving distance of Omaha.
Hitchcock Nature Center
Where: Honey Creek, Iowa
Distance from Omaha: 20 miles
Types of cabins: The beautiful park (a favorite on mine for hiking) has three rustic cabins. They sleep up to 5 people and have A/C and heating, but no water.
Mahoney State Park
Where: Ashland, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 25 miles
Types of cabins: Even with 55 cabins, this park's occupancy fills up early each year, especially during the summer. Cabins hold between 5 to 20 people, with the most updated -- and popular -- cabins (Governor's Row) holding 12.
My family's partial to the treetop cabins in the Margre Village Cabin Loop, but you really can't go wrong at this park.
Kimberly Creek Cabins
Where: Ashland, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 25 miles
Types of cabins: There are eight different accommodations, including glamping domes (heated in the winter!), pods, and cabins that sleep up to six people.
Platte River State Park
Where: Louisville, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 25 miles
Types of cabins: Being at one of my favorite state parks, and so near Mahoney State Park, make Platte River cabins great options. The park has the much-coveted glamping cabins for 2 people, as well as more than 50 other cabins.
Sixteen of the cabins are camper cabins, so while they have A/C and heating, they're pretty rustic. The 21 modern cabins have housekeeping and linens provided.
West Omaha KOA
Where: Gretna, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 25 miles
Types of cabins: While KOA may be known for its campgrounds around the country, this location also has five cabins. Ranging in size, the largest sleeps up to 8 people. These cabins are bring-your-own linens. All but one have a kitchen.
Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins & Campground
Where: Moorhead, Iowa (near Preparation Canyon State Park)
Distance from Omaha: 55 miles
Types of cabins: There are seven cabins and cottages here, and while I've never been, I know some friends who go each year and always tell me all about it. The three cottages have water and plumbing, while the remaining cabins do not.
Sizes vary, but the largest cottage sleeps 6, and most of the others seem to be around a 4-person capacity.
Lake Icaria
Where: Corning, Iowa
Distance from Omaha: 80 miles
Types of cabins: By far, the most impressive cabins in the park are the two, 10-person Cabin Cottages. During the summer, these are typically rented out by the week.
There are also 14 smaller cabins, some with water and a bathroom, and some without. We stayed in a cabin without water and while it was cozy, the nighttime run to the public bathroom isn't my favorite.
Rural Coon Rapids Cabin
Where: Bayard, Iowa
Distance from Omaha: 110 miles
Types of cabin: By far, the largest cabin on this list, it sleeps up to 16 people in its six bedrooms. The log cabin is fully furnished. Springbrook State Park is about 14 miles away.
Kottage Knechtion Treehouse
Where: South Sioux City, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 95 miles
Type of cabin: You guessed it. It's a treehouse. You'll have to climb stairs to get to your accommodations. This small treehouse is perfect for two adults (in fact, they explicitly say it's not suitable for young children). The perk of this place is that's it's not far from Dorothy Picate Nature Center, a great place for hiking.
Ponca State Park
Where: Ponca, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 115 miles
Types of cabins: Ponca State Park has 31 cabins available, ranging from those that sleep 5 on up to sleeping 8. Cabin Loop cabins are more rustic (and affordable) and the popular Conference Center cabins are more modern.
Having stayed in a Cabin Loop cabin, it's not fancy by any means, but nice to have a little kitchen and running water. I know I'd be happier splurging for a Conference Center cabin next time, though.
Hygge Tiny House
Where: Ponca, Neb.
Distance from Omaha: 115 miles
Type of cabin: This tiny house sleeps up to 4 people, but looks most comfortable for 2. It's rustic, and a work-in-progress, so there's only cold water. It's not far from Ponca State Park.
