Homemade Cleaners Review + Giveaway

A while back, I went on a budget kick and tried making my own cleaning supplies. Pinterest was both a blessing and a waste of time – an all-purpose cleaner recipe worked well, the dish detergent not so much.

What is the secret to making a natural cleaner that actually works?

9781612432762.02In the new book “Homemade Cleaners: Quick-and-Easy, Toxic-Free Recipes,” authors Mandy O’Brien and Dionna Ford go into detail on why some ingredients work better than commercially made, potentially toxic, cleaners. The book reads with authority of a biologist (turned stay-at-home mother) and a fan of natural parenting. What I mean is, they write for parents, addressing concerns of ours (keeping surfaces clean and toxin free, especially the ones our kids tend to lick…). And they back it up with chemistry explanations and eye-opening facts and statistics. A lot of facts. I’ll admit I skipped ahead after a while because I wanted to get right to the DIY stuff.

The best part of the book is the great variety of recipes using simple ingredients a lot of us have at home. The frugal mom in me is rejoicing! There are 150 recipes to try out.

From bathroom cleaners, to laundry detergent to air fresheners, this book covers most household needs. As a parent, I’m happy to find a resource to help me make affordable, toxin-free cleaners, one that isn’t hit-or-miss like the random recipes I find online.
