“The Nation Before The Railroad”

July 9 @ 10:00 am 6:00 pm

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum will have the historic Louisiana Purchase Proclamation  featured in the museum’s newest exhibit, “The Nation Before the Railroad.” The exhibit is on display May 9 through July 31.

The exhibition will feature interpretive displays that provide historical context for the proclamation, and the eventual development of the Transcontinental Railroad. The display will include the following from the Union Pacific Collection: An 1806 map of North America showing the extent of the Louisiana Purchase, and a volume from the first Pacific Railroad Surveys in 1853 used to decide the eventual route of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.

About the Louisiana Purchase Proclamation:

The landmark 18th century document was delivered to a newspaper and printed for the public on Nov. 2, 1803, about seven months after the signing of the Louisiana Purchase – one of the most transformative events in the United States history.

This original proclamation will be on public display for a limited time, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience a defining moment that doubled the size of the young nation. It will also be joined by other related documents and historical objects from Union Pacific’s collection, including an original Jefferson Peace Medal from 1801.
