Fabrics of Africa: Weaving Culture and Community

February 20 @ 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The special exhibit “Fabrics of Africa: Weaving Culture and Community” is on display at KANEKO from Feb. 7 to April 27, 2025. The exhibition includes an interactive element for visitors, who are invited to contribute to a digital tapestry created through traditional African design elements. As each individual pattern is woven into the whole, the growing, evolving piece celebrates both African textiles and our interconnectedness. The exhibit is included with regular admission.

Exhibition curator, Suzanne Gunn, was raised in the villages of Kenya. Gunn’s connection to African craftsmanship was instilled through her mother, who stimulated Gunn’s appreciation for traditional artistry. This early influence inspired Gunn’s subsequent travels across the continent, where she built lasting relationships with expert artisans and collected extraordinary textiles reflecting both cultural heritage and artistic innovation.

In recent years, there has been a significant shift toward modern printing techniques in fabric production. This transition makes an African exhibit showcasing traditional textiles even more valuable. Such an exhibit not only preserves but also shares the rich history, culture, and rituals associated with these fabrics.
