Amphibians of Nebraska

May 4 @ 1:00 am - 9:00 pm

Free

Hop into the fascinating world of Nebraska frogs with state herpetologist Dennis Ferraro at the Schramm Education Center as we kick off National Amphibian Week. Learn about the diverse amphibians that call Nebraska home and how to help conserve them. Note: Sessions are recommended for ages 8+ due to the lecture activity and walking involved with the outdoor field time.

Two unique sessions will be offered; choose to attend one or both:

Afternoon Session: Amphibians of Nebraska and Frog Catching 101 (1-5 p.m.)

1-3 p.m. Amphibians of Nebraska Talk: Learn about the many amphibians that call Nebraska home in this lecture-style presentation in the Schramm Education Center Classroom.
3-5 p.m. Frog Catching 101: With the supervision of a professional scientist, we will learn how to safely catch and identify frogs. We’ll use the iNaturalist app during this outdoor session to document amphibian diversity in Schramm Park.

Evening Session: Frog Calls and Frog Calls 101 (6:30-9 p.m.)

6:30-7:30 p.m. Frog Calls Talk: Who goes there? This will be a lecture-style presentation in the Schramm Education Center Classroom. Learn about the many vocalizations made by frogs and how to identify Nebraska frogs by their calls.
7:30-9 p.m. Frog Calls 101: We’ll head outside and practice identifying frog calls in the park. We’ll listen for peeps, croaks and ribbets and document the frogs we hear with the iNaturalist app.

This event is free, but advance registration is required. Register by filling out the Google Form: https://forms.gle/L3gNcPq3Zx4gviRDA or by emailing [email protected] or calling 402-332-5022. Registration is limited to 25 people per session.

During the session, you may walk up to a mile during the outdoor time. If you plan to attend both sessions, dinner will be on your own – bring a picnic and eat at the park or head into Gretna or Louisville to pick up food. A state park vehicle entry permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot. Participants should dress for the weather forecast and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty.
