Wrestling in a Hijab: An Evening of Syrian Food, Community, and Solidarity

SET The Bar will host Wrestling in a Hijab: An Evening of Syrian Food, Community, and Solidarity on Oct. 13. A conversation with Raiefa and her twin daughters, Alsafa and Almarwa, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
More than a decade ago, Raiefa and her family were displaced from their home in Syria. Her daughters went on to wrestle collegiately and were among the first athletes to wrestle wearing hijab in Omaha. The evening will recognize the family’s strength, kindness, dignity and resilience.
The conversation will explore life in Syria and the food and traditions the family brought with them, growing up Syrian in Omaha, and the overlapping identities people navigate in sports. The family will share the experiences they choose to bring to the discussion.
Raiefa will prepare and share Syrian dishes, offering guests a taste of food connected to home, family and belonging. Tickets are $40, and space is limited. Drinks are available for purchase separately. All proceeds from food sales will go directly to the family.
