Summer Melodramas

Popcorn Productions and Mahoney State Park present three melodramas this summer: “Witch of Waverly Wood,” “Pelican Pete’s Amazing Feat,” and “Showdown at Sundown” at the Kountze Theater inside the park. Performances start May 22 and run through Aug. 23. For ticket reservations, call (402) 944-2957.
Synopsis:
“Witch of Waverly Wood”

It’s been years since Gretel and her brother, Hansel, escaped from the candy house of an evil witch. Now all grown up, Gretel is hoping for a quieter life as proprietress of the “Happily Ever After” Inn at the edge of Waverly Wood. Alas, these woods come with a witch of their own: Pernicia, who has dastardly plans involving a handsome young stranger named Jack. Can Gretel and her faithful friend, Little Red Riding Hood, save Jack from a terrible fate?
“Pelican Pete’s Amazing Feat”

The scene is a general store interior in Stafford, Kansas. Proprietor Maude Spickard is constantly harassed by Muskrat Sam Winchester, a local trapper, who is in love with her. Ma is being helped in her store by heiress Nora Larabee, whose family owns the local flour mill. Nate Reese, alias notorious Hogwash Harry, is posing as the editor of the town newspaper while plotting to rid the town of the Larabee family. Then there is Pelican Pete, a local trapper who is notorious for his tremendous appetite. He falls in love with Nora while attempting to save her and her family from Hogwash’s evil plot.
“Showdown at Sundown”

Shady, evil and dishonest doin’s are being done at Luke Lavender’s Log Lodge. Luke Lavender, the type of snake in the grass that gives snakes a bad name, and his slinky girlfriend Belladonna Slither are making money hand over fist at the lodge, but for Lavender that isn’t enough! His evil plan is to use sweet and innocent mail order bride Annie Pleasant to make a killing! Enter Sam Steadfast, handsome and brave rancher, who falls in love with Annie at first sight. Sam is broken-hearted when he discovers that Annie is to marry another. Will Sam and good-hearted lady mule-skinner Carbine Molly Muldoon be able to save Annie or will there be a… Showdown at Sundown.
