Love ’em or hate ’em, casinos are a popular attraction for many adults. With the prospect of Omaha metro’s first casino opening in 2023, I thought it’d be a good time to look at what casinos are already open and nearby. Here’s a look at gambling in Nebraska and Iowa, as well as a few within a short drive:

There are a lot of casinos and racetracks near Omaha, so please gamble responsibly as you go out to visiting them. Set a spending limit, and only gamble with money you can afford to lose. It’s also a good idea to set a time limit.

Does Nebraska have casinos?

Yes, there are casinos in Nebraska. Voters approved casinos in horse racing facilities and tribal-owned casinos. There are five open now: WarHorse Casino in Lincoln, the Iron Horse Bar & Casino in Emerson, Native Star Casino in Winnebago, Lucky 77 Casino in Walthill, and Ohiya Casino & Resort in Niobrara.

A temporary casino will open in late December in Grand Island prior to the eventual opening of a Grand Island Casino Resort in the next few years. A casino in the Omaha metro, WarHorse Casino Omaha, is slated to open in late 2023. Other confirmed casinos in the works: Harrah’s Casino in Columbus and WarHorse in South Sioux City.

Does Omaha have casinos?

Not yet. WarHorse Omaha is slated to open up just south of the metro area in 2023. It’s being built where Horseman’s Park is located in Ralston, Neb.

Prairie Flower Casino seems to be in Omaha since it’s so near Eppley Airfield, but it’s actually in Carter Lake, Iowa.

Is sports betting legal in Nebraska?

Retail sports betting was legalized in November 2021, but regulations have been slow in rolling out. In-person retail wagers are allowed at approved racetracks, but there are no sportsbooks open yet in the state (most racing-casino venues where its legal have yet to open). When they do open, they will be overseen by the Nebraska Gaming Commission.

Prior to this legislation passing, fans of sports betting could cross the Iowa-Nebraska border and bet at casinos there.

Is mobile sports betting legal in Nebraska?

No. Mobile wagering activities are illegal in Nebraska. You also cannot bet on in-state college games or teams, nor on individual athletes competing in collegiate games.
