SUMMARY:Elevate
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Elevate” by quiltdologist Celeste Butler runs July 12 through Aug. 23. Opening Reception is July 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Artist Talk will be Aug. 1 from 7 to 8 p.m. featuring Chef Jamil from House of Bah. \n\n\n\nArtist statement: Any negative thing–past\, present or future–intended to cause hurt or harm is called into submission\, exposed and used to elevate. \n\n\n\nWhen your lived experience is Blackness it can’t be overlooked\, pushed in a corner or ignored. We get to live and love each other from a healthy space. \n\n\n\nWhen I see people who are melanated\, I look for all of the features and natural beauty that make us striking and unique. Elevate your heads and hearts to know that you are enough. Skin soft as velvet\, broad noises that take up space\, lusciously soft thick lips like pillows\, textures of hair that defy gravity and transmit information\, thick thighs and booties so round the moon stops by to give a high five! Last but not least\, knowledge and creativity so vast that we built a civilized nation.  \n\n\n\nSo\, from this day forward\, in a world that is constantly working to annihilate and erase you\, don’t ever hold your head down or forget who you are. We rise with a renewed commitment to build\, work together and elevate.  \n\n\n\nThere is no division amongst us unless we allow it to be. I intentionally curated a space where love and rest can be elevated and grow side by side.
