SUMMARY:"Hard Lessons In Light"
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Brown’s “Hard Lessons In Light” is a photography exhibition centered on Black women as teachers\, memory keepers\, and cultural guides whose knowledge has often been shaped through struggle\, displacement\, and care. The exhibit runs Feb. 6 through April 11. Opening Reception is Feb. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours: Co-Op + Gallery HoursTuesday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nWednesday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nFriday10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibit: “Hard Lessons in Light” reflects on what is learned when difficult histories are brought into view. his photography exhibition centers Black women as teachers\, memory keepers\, and cultural guides whose knowledge has often been shaped through struggle\, displacement\, and care. Their lessons are not abstract\, they emerge from lived experience\, community responsibility\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nEducation\, in this context\, extends beyond classrooms and institutions. Black women have long taught through storytelling\, example\, and collective memory\, even when formal systems denied them access or authority. These forms of teaching\, rooted in lived knowledge\, expand how education is defined and practiced. \n\n\n\nDiversity among women educators strengthens educational outcomes for all students. Research has shown that when students learn in environments that include racially and culturally diverse teachers\, academic engagement increases and measurable outcomes\, such as standardized test scores\, attendance\, and long-term educational attainment\, often improve. Students benefit not only from representation\, but from expanded teaching approaches that value multiple ways of learning\, communicating\, and understanding the world. \n\n\n\nBy bringing these community educators into the light\, the exhibition asks viewers to consider what has been lost\, what has endured\, and what can be restored. Hard Lessons in Light invites reflection on education as both a site of inequity and possibility.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Elevate” by quiltdologist Celeste Butler runs July 12 through Aug. 23. Opening Reception is July 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Artist Talk will be Aug. 1 from 7 to 8 p.m. featuring Chef Jamil from House of Bah. \n\n\n\nArtist statement: Any negative thing–past\, present or future–intended to cause hurt or harm is called into submission\, exposed and used to elevate. \n\n\n\nWhen your lived experience is Blackness it can’t be overlooked\, pushed in a corner or ignored. We get to live and love each other from a healthy space. \n\n\n\nWhen I see people who are melanated\, I look for all of the features and natural beauty that make us striking and unique. Elevate your heads and hearts to know that you are enough. Skin soft as velvet\, broad noises that take up space\, lusciously soft thick lips like pillows\, textures of hair that defy gravity and transmit information\, thick thighs and booties so round the moon stops by to give a high five! Last but not least\, knowledge and creativity so vast that we built a civilized nation.  \n\n\n\nSo\, from this day forward\, in a world that is constantly working to annihilate and erase you\, don’t ever hold your head down or forget who you are. We rise with a renewed commitment to build\, work together and elevate.  \n\n\n\nThere is no division amongst us unless we allow it to be. I intentionally curated a space where love and rest can be elevated and grow side by side.
