SUMMARY:Black Violin
DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, Black Violin has been merging string arrangements with modern beats and vocals and building bridges in communities along the way. Members Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste first met in orchestra class at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale\, becoming classically trained on the violin and viola through their high school and college careers. Post-college\, they reconvened to produce beats for South Florida rappers\, and began building an audience in local clubs. \nBlack Violin’s 2019 album release\, “Take the Stairs\,” earned a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”. The band also recently received their second ever Grammy Award nomination for the track “The Message” as Best Americana Performance\, in collaboration with The Blind Boys of Alabama. \nBlack Violin has plays roughly 200 shows a year; many of which are performances for young\, low-income students in urban communities. In the last year alone\, the group has played for over 100\,000 students with the goal of challenging stereotypes and preconceived notions of what a “classical musician” looks and sounds like.  \nTickets start at $24. \nAbout the preshow Curtain Warmer \nTicketholders are invited to join us at 6:40 p.m. in the Steelhouse Omaha lobby for a pre-show activity. Local Emcee Tylynn Music will share music from her catalog with audiences before an electric night with Black Violin.

Performances are Saturday and Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. All ages welcome. \nCompagnia TPO is a pioneering\, multi-disciplinary performance group that melds music\, dance\, art\, sculpture\, digital media\, lighting\, and sound into a one-of-kind\, interactive experience. In “Butterflies\,” members of the audience participate with the actors and on the video projection set in the middle of the Steelhouse floor. \nFollowing the 45-minute performance inside\, families will then move outside to the Steelhouse patio for the Pittsburgh based Squonk Opera’s “Hand in Hand.” \nSquonk’s “Hand to Hand” is propelled by two giant puppet hands\, each the size of a house\, and rigged like a sailing ship. Squonk’s original rock music drives a journey where both the band and the audience members come together to grab the rigging\, each individual powering movement of giant fingers.

In “Butterflies\,” members of the audience participate with the actors and on the video projection set in the middle of the Steelhouse floor. \nFollowing the 45-minute performance inside\, families will then move outside to the Steelhouse patio for the Pittsburgh based Squonk Opera’s “Hand in Hand.” \nSquonk’s “Hand to Hand” is propelled by two giant puppet hands\, each the size of a house\, and rigged like a sailing ship. Squonk’s original rock music drives a journey where both the band and the audience members come together to grab the rigging\, each individual powering movement of giant fingers.

Jones as the moderator\, and the speakers will be Da Beatminerz\, Hi-Tek\, D. Prosper\, M-1\, and DJ Crabrangucci\, speakers. The Hip-Hop Battle Royale with DJs Da Beatminerz and DJ Crabrangucci starts at 8 p.m. and features Omaha’s best dancers will compete for the top spot while DJ’s play the best Hip Hop of the 90s. Registration required to compete.
