SUMMARY:"Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding"
DESCRIPTION:“Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding” is on display at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts from June 5 through Sept. 13. Opening Reception is June 5 with complimentary libations and light hors d’oeuvres. Bemis Center members may arrive early for an exclusive preview of the exhibitions and Meet + Greet with exhibiting artists\, directly preceding the public reception from 6 to 7 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Thursday is open until 9 p.m.). \n\n\n\nCurated by Chief Curator and Director of Programs Rachel Adams\, “Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding” is a solo exhibition by the Kenyan-Liberian-American artist\, whose experimental and multidisciplinary practice explores themes of hybridity\, memory\, and sustenance. This site-responsive exhibition unfolds through her varied practice that integrates mixed media\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and text. \n\n\n\nCurrently based in New York City\, Kawinzi creates work that draws from personal archives and broader histories of migration\, land\, labor\, and language. Across two galleries\, the exhibition unfolds as an intimate-yet-expansive exploration of cultural lineage\, ecological interconnection\, and the embodied practices through which individuals and communities persist and adapt. \n\n\n\nKawinzi’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, and her return to Bemis Center marks a meaningful continuation of a longstanding relationship with the institution: She was a Bemis Center artist-in-residence in 2016 and was later recognized as the recipient of the organization’s first Ree Kaneko Award in 2019. \n\n\n\nRelated programming: \n\n\n\nPrograms are free; reservations are encouraged. \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, June 5\, 6–7 p.m.\, Member Preview and Meet + Greet\n\n\n\nFriday\, June 5\, 7–9 p.m.\, Opening Reception: Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding+ MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 6\, 3 p.m.\, Tour with Exhibiting Artists Miatta Kawinzi\, Rachel Cox\, and Rose Marie Cromwell\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 11\, 7 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 27\, 3 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 11\, 3 p.m.\, OMA ARTalks\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 18\, 1:30 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour (part of Open House / Open Studios)\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 18\, 3:30 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour (part of Open House / Open Studios)\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 8\, 11 a.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 8\, 2 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nThursday\, August 13\, 7 p.m.\, In Conversation: Miatta Kawinzi with Chrislyn Laurore\n\n\n\nThursday\, August 20\, 7 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 29\, 2 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 29\, 3 p.m.\, Panel Discussion: Rachel Cox\, Rose Marie Cromwell\, and Michelle Millar Fisher\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 3\, 7 p.m.\, Lecture with Yasmina Price\, Yale University

SUMMARY:"MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape"
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape\,” is at the Bemis Center from June 5 through Sept. 13. Opening Reception is June 5with complimentary libations and light hors d’oeuvres. Bemis Center members may arrive early for an exclusive preview of the exhibitions and Meet + Greet with exhibiting artists\, directly preceding the public reception from 6 to 7 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday\, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, and until 9 p.m. on Thursday. \n\n\n\nCurated by Rachel Adams\, “MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape” brings together a variety of image-based media by Iowa City-based artist Rachel Cox and Miami-based artist Rose Marie Cromwell in an exhibition examining themes of tenderness\, care\, and motherhood. \n\n\n\nThrough distinct yet overlapping visual practices\, Cox and Cromwell explore the complexities of closeness — emotional\, physical\, and spatial — revealing vulnerabilities surrounding familial and personal relationships and public and private life. Cromwell’s work often engages the American landscape as both subject and witness\, while Cox’s photographs move between documentary and dreamlike observation\, tracing emotional and environmental transformation. Together\, they create a layered meditation on intimacy\, perception\, and the ways we locate ourselves within a changing world. \n\n\n\nBoth artists have exhibited widely\, with Cox’s work shown at institutions including the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha and the Musee del’Elysee in Lausanne\, Switzerland\, and Cromwell’s work recently featured in a solo museum exhibition at Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami. \n\n\n\nUpcoming related programming: \n\n\n\nPrograms are free; reservations are encouraged. \n\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 3\, 7 p.m.\, Lecture with Yasmina Price\, Yale University\n\n\n\nFriday\, June 5\, 6–7 p.m.\, Member Preview and Meet + Greet\n\n\n\nFriday\, June 5\, 7–9 p.m.\, Opening Reception: Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding+ MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 6\, 3 p.m.\, Tour with Exhibiting Artists Miatta Kawinzi\, Rachel Cox\, and Rose Marie Cromwell\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 11\, 7 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 27\, 3 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 11\, 3 p.m.\, OMA ARTalks\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 18\, 1:30 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour (part of Open House / Open Studios)\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 18\, 3:30 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour (part of Open House / Open Studios)\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 8\, 11 a.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 8\, 2 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nThursday\, August 13\, 7 p.m.\, In Conversation: Miatta Kawinzi with Chrislyn Laurore\n\n\n\nThursday\, August 20\, 7 p.m.\, Curator-Led Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 29\, 2 p.m.\, Exhibitions Highlights Tour\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 29\, 3 p.m.\, Panel Discussion: Rachel Cox\, Rose Marie Cromwell\, and Michelle Millar Fisher

SUMMARY:"Therman Statom: Colecciones de Estudio de Invierno"
DESCRIPTION:“Colecciones de Estudio de Invierno” brings together new and recent work by Omaha sculptor and glass artist Therman Statom\, one of the defining figures of the contemporary glass movement. The title points to the nature of the work itself: Pieces that emerged from sustained studio practice\, gathered here as a kind of personal inventory\, objects that carry the accumulation of a long creative life. The exhibition runs through Sept. 26. Note: The museum closes one hour early on Sundays at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nStatom works by cutting\, painting\, and assembling sheets of plate glass\, gluing them together into large-scale sculptural forms—chairs\, ladders\, houses\, wall-mounted constructions—and sandblasting their surfaces into canvases for color and line. Found objects enter the work along the way\, adding texture and narrative. The resulting pieces are at once structural and painterly\, drawing from the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism and the economy of Minimalism without settling comfortably into either tradition.

SUMMARY:"Gestures: A Retrospective Of Work By Peter Millett"
DESCRIPTION:“Gestures” traces the arc of Peter Millett’s practice across several decades\, moving through distinct periods of material and form. From the dense\, rusted weight of early Corten steel to the open\, luminous planes of his most recent powder-coated works\, the exhibition unfolds as a kind of visual narrative—one in which each body of work leads naturally\, almost inevitably\, to the next. Rounded log forms gave way to steel pipe pieces; massive\, earthbound compositions opened into airy\, planar structures that seem to breathe. \n\n\n\nThe Opening Reception is May 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is free to the public. \n\n\n\nBefore or after your visit\, take a stroll through the Gene Leahy Mall Sculpture Park to experience Millett’s work “Raindance” in the open air. \n\n\n\nGallery hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 1 to 7 p.m.\, and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
