DESCRIPTION:Save Ferris plays Jan. 16 at the Holland Music Club located inside the Holland Performing Arts Center. All ages show. Doors open at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nFormed in 1995\, Save Ferris remains one of the seminal and most beloved bands from the third wave of ska. Led by frontwoman Monique Powell\, the band boasts high-octane vocals and a powerful ska-pop-punk-rock sound. \n\n\n\nThe band’s name is in reference to the 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off\,” which inspired many of the youth in the 1990s. Save Ferris did much of the same\, having been formed in Orange County\, California around 1995. The band went on hiatus in 2003 but is back and bigger than ever.

DESCRIPTION:Pirates might be reduced to a Halloween costume for some people\, but they are a year-round fascination for archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer Lisa Briggs. She will talk about her career during “National Geographic Live: A Pirate’s Life.” \n\n\n\nAdventure with her on an assignment to the Mediterranean Sea to explore how piracy shaped the Roman Empire. We will also meet the Pirate Queen of China\, then head into the lab with Lisa to follow the most famous renegade: Blackbeard. \n\n\n\nBriggs is an underwater archaeologist\, scuba instructor\, and technical diver. Her current research examines ancient shipwrecks of the Mediterranean Sea and how scientific methods can illuminate the stories of the cargo these ships carried and the daring sailors who sailed the seas of the past. She also has a particular interest in demonstrating how the intersection of science and adventure can inspire young students to pursue STEM subjects.
