SUMMARY:Appliqué Sur Le Terrain
DESCRIPTION:In the installation “Appliqué sur le terrain\,” Henry Payer views the cultural landscape of present-day Nebraska through the vibrant lens of Indigenous ribbonwork appliqué. The installation is on view through Sept. 4\, 2025.  \n “Appliqué sur le terrain” involves sewing layers of silk ribbons\, cotton\, wool\, and glass beads to make regalia for special occasions. The distinctive symmetrical patterns reflect kinship\, ecological knowledge\, and oral histories of various Indigenous communities.  \nInspired by The Joslyn’s collection of Karl Bodmer watercolors\, Payer created eight appliqué collages that layer Missouri River landscapes\, calico fabric\, and texts about the colonization of the region. He hand-stitched the designs in the Ho-Chunk appliqué style\, called zeenįba hirarucak. Each floral and geometric pattern references historical examples created by Umónhon\, Ponca\, Ho-Chunk\, Pawnee\, Ioway\, and Otoe-Missouria women\, honoring the legacy of artists whose names were not documented. As part of this collaborative project\, contemporary artists have generously shared their appliqué stories and regalia. \nNote: The museum is open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Abraham Lincoln: President\, Emancipator\, Corporate Pitchman
DESCRIPTION:“Abraham Lincoln: President\, Emancipator\, Corporate Pitchman” is on display at The Durham Museum Jan. 20 through April 27.  The exhibit offers an innovative and immersive multi-sensory exploration of one of America’s most iconic figures. Through tactile displays and detailed imagery\, the exhibition sheds light on Lincoln’s multifaceted roles – as a president who led the United States through the Civil War\, an emancipator who took pivotal steps toward abolishing slavery and a corporate figure who\, posthumously\, became a symbol in modern advertising. \nVisitors are invited to engage with Lincoln’s legacy in ways that appeal to both the senses and the intellect\, with tactile images enhancing the experience for all audiences\, including those who are blind or visually impaired. By merging history with contemporary cultural analysis\, the exhibition encourages a critical look at how Lincoln’s image has been appropriated and commercialized over time. \nExhibit is included with admission.

From its emergence as a technological marvel in mid-nineteenth century landscape views to its adoption by artists as a symbol of modern life and industry\, the railroad was a significant motif in several major art movements. \nFeaturing paintings from the Hudson River School to postwar abstraction\, the exhibition considers the impact of the railroad on American art through significant works by Albert Bierstadt\, Thomas Hart Benton\, John Sloan\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Jacob Lawrence\, George Tooker\, Kay Sage\, and others. Depictions of rail workers and passengers present trains as spaces for distinct forms of social interaction. Other works illuminate the railroad as an engine of modernity\, but also a cause of population displacement\, labor struggles\, and environmental destruction that changed the fabric of American life\, from the urban centers of the East Coast to the Heartland and Pacific Ocean. \nTue–Sun: 10 am–4 pm\nLate until 8 pm on Wed & Thu\nClosed Mon and major holidays

SUMMARY:"Little Black Girl Memoir"
DESCRIPTION:Field of Lily’s exhibition “Little Black Girl Memoir” is on display from March 14 through April 19. Gallery hours are Tuesday\, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Friday & Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. \n\n \n\n“Little Black Girl Memoir” is a vibrant and thought-provoking exhibition that explores the experiences of artist Lily\, a young black girl growing up in North Omaha. Lily reimagines her childhood memories\, challenging notions of community\, beauty\, pain\, and identity. The exhibition features mental photographs recreated to three-dimensional paintings and sculptures\, intricately crafted from materials like wood\, leaves\, sand\, and fabric to give its depth of symbolic meaning. \nIncluded are sculptures of Nonverbal Communication Studies series that explores the psychology of understanding human nature\, communication\, and creating connections between the viewer and art. Alongside of these\, Lily presents a new collection of sculptures that embodies her childhood understanding of beauty as a journey of self-discovery. These sculptures speak to the ways in which societal expectations of beauty can shape our experiences\, even as a young girl navigating the world around us. \nThrough this exhibition\, Lily offers a nuanced exploration of the complexities of growing up black and female in America\, revisiting her childhood memories and challenging traditional notions of beauty through her adult lens. This work\, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and hope\, invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and resilience of childhood.

SUMMARY:All Aboard: The Railroad In Art
DESCRIPTION:The temporary exhibition “All Aboard: The Railroad in American Art\, 1840–1955” is on display at The Joslyn Art Museum from Feb. 15 through May 4. Tickets are $10 for the general public ages 13 and older; members and children 12 and under are free.  \nExhibit free days: \n\nFirst weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (March 1 & 2\, April 5 & 6\, and May 3 & 4)\nFirst Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. (March 5 and April 2)\nFirst Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. (March 6\, April 3\, and May 1)\n\nThe exhibit explores depictions of trains and train infrastructure in American painting during the 19th and 20th centuries.
