SUMMARY:Appliqué Sur Le Terrain
DESCRIPTION:In the installation “Appliqué sur le terrain\,” Henry Payer views the cultural landscape of present-day Nebraska through the vibrant lens of Indigenous ribbonwork appliqué. The installation is on view through Sept. 4\, 2025.  \n “Appliqué sur le terrain” involves sewing layers of silk ribbons\, cotton\, wool\, and glass beads to make regalia for special occasions. The distinctive symmetrical patterns reflect kinship\, ecological knowledge\, and oral histories of various Indigenous communities.  \nInspired by The Joslyn’s collection of Karl Bodmer watercolors\, Payer created eight appliqué collages that layer Missouri River landscapes\, calico fabric\, and texts about the colonization of the region. He hand-stitched the designs in the Ho-Chunk appliqué style\, called zeenįba hirarucak. Each floral and geometric pattern references historical examples created by Umónhon\, Ponca\, Ho-Chunk\, Pawnee\, Ioway\, and Otoe-Missouria women\, honoring the legacy of artists whose names were not documented. As part of this collaborative project\, contemporary artists have generously shared their appliqué stories and regalia. \nNote: The museum is open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursdays.

Tickets are $10 for the general public ages 13 and older; members and children 12 and under are free.  \nExhibit free days: \n\nFirst weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (March 1 & 2\, April 5 & 6\, and May 3 & 4)\nFirst Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. (March 5 and April 2)\nFirst Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. (March 6\, April 3\, and May 1)\n\nThe exhibit explores depictions of trains and train infrastructure in American painting during the 19th and 20th centuries. From its emergence as a technological marvel in mid-nineteenth century landscape views to its adoption by artists as a symbol of modern life and industry\, the railroad was a significant motif in several major art movements. \nFeaturing paintings from the Hudson River School to postwar abstraction\, the exhibition considers the impact of the railroad on American art through significant works by Albert Bierstadt\, Thomas Hart Benton\, John Sloan\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Jacob Lawrence\, George Tooker\, Kay Sage\, and others. Depictions of rail workers and passengers present trains as spaces for distinct forms of social interaction. Other works illuminate the railroad as an engine of modernity\, but also a cause of population displacement\, labor struggles\, and environmental destruction that changed the fabric of American life\, from the urban centers of the East Coast to the Heartland and Pacific Ocean. \nTue–Sun: 10 am–4 pm\nLate until 8 pm on Wed & Thu\nClosed Mon and major holidays

SUMMARY:John Trudell Lecture in Native American Studies
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 John Trudell Lecture in Native American Studies will be by Janelle Whipple on April 8 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’ Community Engagement Center Rooms 230/231. \nTopic: Since time immemorial Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples have enjoyed a deep-rooted kinship connection with our plant relatives. Plants have been our food source\, our medicine\, and an important source of mental clarity that has helped us maintain balance. It is our collective responsibility to continue to nurture that harmony between us and the natural world\, with whom we have kinship obligations. Therefore\, a foundation of our continued wellbeing and a pillar of our human rights as Indigenous Peoples means securing access to and knowledge about our plant relatives within our Native communities for all the generations to come. \nDispossession of our homelands and assimilationist policies endangered these precious relationships in the past. If we are further prevented from keeping that knowledge alive our relatives—both plant and human—will suffer. Hence\, we need to hold space for learning or re-learning our plant medicines; by knowing how to look for them\, how to harvest and process them appropriately\, and how and when to administer them responsibly. This knowledge should and will be preserved within our kin groups and communities\, yet we should guard against those who might misappropriate our traditional knowledge for their own gain. Outside our communities\, we seek allies to ensure our rights will be recognized to continue to harvest our special plants and use them openly. \nAbout the lecturer: Janelle Whipple (Santee/Ponca) is a dedicated professional and scholar with a rich background in Native American education\, leadership\, and community service. She is completing her doctoral studies in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University. Janelle also holds an MA in Tribal Administration and Governance from the University of Minnesota Duluth. In addition to her expertise in Tribal Nation building and federal Indian Law and policy\, Janelle possesses a deep interest in traditional ecological knowledge and plant medicines.

Alongside of these\, Lily presents a new collection of sculptures that embodies her childhood understanding of beauty as a journey of self-discovery. These sculptures speak to the ways in which societal expectations of beauty can shape our experiences\, even as a young girl navigating the world around us. \nThrough this exhibition\, Lily offers a nuanced exploration of the complexities of growing up black and female in America\, revisiting her childhood memories and challenging traditional notions of beauty through her adult lens. This work\, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and hope\, invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and resilience of childhood.
