SUMMARY:Les Indes Galantes
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Clément Cogitore: Les Indes Galantes” is on display at The Joslyn from Sept. 10 through Feb. 23\, 2025. Working at the intersection of cinema\, photography\, and installation\, Clément Cogitore examines ritual\, collective memory\, and notions of the sacred. “Les Indes Galantes: takes its title and music from a 1735 opera-ballet by French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. The fourth and final section of the opera is inspired by a meeting in 1725 between six Native American tribal chiefs and King Louis XV\, during which the chiefs performed several traditional dances. Cogitore pairs Rameau’s dramatic Baroque soundtrack with a style of dance born in Los Angeles in the early 1990s known as K.R.U.M.P. Spanning ages\, races\, and ethnicities\, Cogitore’s dancers gather in a circle on a sparsely-lit stage to engage in a “battle\,” a common K.R.U.M.P performance format. The filmmaker captures this scene from multiple vantage points—distant observer\, audience member\, performer—to immerse viewers in this tight-knit dance community. \n

SUMMARY:Eva LeWitt
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring works by Eva LeWitt is on display at The Joslyn from Sept. 10 through Jan. 20\, 2025. LeWitt approaches her sculptures and installations with a spirit of experimentation\, curiosity\, and play. Subtly intervening in a long tradition of abstraction\, LeWitt builds upon the pared-down aesthetics of Minimalism and Conceptualism\, while offering a rejoinder to art historical conventions about what media are deemed appropriate for fine art. Employing common\, industrially-produced materials\, such as mesh netting\, silicone\, and latex\, LeWitt masterfully reimagines familiar things. Her whimsical\, unexpected objects dismantle viewers’ presuppositions about how such materials can and should function. Responding to light and physical space\, LeWitt transforms ceilings\, corners\, floors\, and walls. Her exhibition in The Joslyn’s Riley Contemporary Artists Project Gallery will alter how visitors perceive and navigate this space and upend their understanding of the built environment. \n

SUMMARY:Will You Watch Me Win?
DESCRIPTION:“Will You Watch Me Win?” an exhibition by April Bey\, will be on display Sept. 26 through Dec. 7 at The Union For Contemporary Art. The closing reception and conversation with the artist is on Dec. 7.  \nThe exhibition invites viewers to explore the enchanting lore of Atlantica—a vibrant\, imagined utopia where Black queer joy and resilience reign supreme. The exhibition centers on the Magical Blue Holes found around the planet Earth\, mystical portals connecting Earth’s oceans to Atlantica\, where whales and marine life traverse between realms. These blue holes also house space stations\, iconic for their bustling beauty supply stores. Bey’s work features archival ads from these Atlantican beauty stores\, weaving narratives of self-love and autonomy. Through this exhibit\, Bey poses the powerful question: Will you watch me win if I ask nothing of you? If I revel in my own joy and beauty?

SUMMARY:Angels in America Part One
DESCRIPTION:Omaha Community Playhouse presents “Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches” Oct. 4 through Nov. 3. \nSynopsis: The Pulitzer Prize®- and Tony Award®-winning drama “Angels in America” is one of the greatest American plays of this past century. In the midst of the AIDS crisis during the 1980s\, six New Yorkers with interconnected lives grapple with life and death\, love and sex and heaven and hell. Called “a gay fantasia on national themes\,” the play examines the queerness and entity of America through various perspectives\, ranging from suffering to sacredness. Angels in America reminds us that we\, even in the darkest of times\, can find community and comfort. \nDisclaimer: Contains adult language and situations. May not be suitable for young audiences.
