SUMMARY:"Hard Lessons In Light"
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Brown’s “Hard Lessons In Light” is a photography exhibition centered on Black women as teachers\, memory keepers\, and cultural guides whose knowledge has often been shaped through struggle\, displacement\, and care. The exhibit runs Feb. 6 through April 11. Opening Reception is Feb. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours: Co-Op + Gallery HoursTuesday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nWednesday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday1 – 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nFriday10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibit: “Hard Lessons in Light” reflects on what is learned when difficult histories are brought into view. his photography exhibition centers Black women as teachers\, memory keepers\, and cultural guides whose knowledge has often been shaped through struggle\, displacement\, and care. Their lessons are not abstract\, they emerge from lived experience\, community responsibility\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nEducation\, in this context\, extends beyond classrooms and institutions. Black women have long taught through storytelling\, example\, and collective memory\, even when formal systems denied them access or authority. These forms of teaching\, rooted in lived knowledge\, expand how education is defined and practiced. \n\n\n\nDiversity among women educators strengthens educational outcomes for all students. Research has shown that when students learn in environments that include racially and culturally diverse teachers\, academic engagement increases and measurable outcomes\, such as standardized test scores\, attendance\, and long-term educational attainment\, often improve. Students benefit not only from representation\, but from expanded teaching approaches that value multiple ways of learning\, communicating\, and understanding the world. \n\n\n\nBy bringing these community educators into the light\, the exhibition asks viewers to consider what has been lost\, what has endured\, and what can be restored. Hard Lessons in Light invites reflection on education as both a site of inequity and possibility.

SUMMARY:"Close to the Clouds: Encountering Digital Diasporas"
DESCRIPTION:“Close to the Clouds: Encountering Digital Diasporas” features Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme\, Zainab Aliyu\, Rindon Johnson\, Lauren Lee McCarthy and Kyle McDonald\, Rebeca Romero\, and Tianyi Sun and Fiel Guhit – who consider how the formation of collective identities takes place utilizing technology and the internet. The exhibit runs through May 3. Note: The Bemis Center stays open late on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.). \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition: The artists in “Close to the Clouds” use multiple approaches to expand the idea of “digital diasporas”—their works are invitations to oscillate between the physical and the digital\, through durational mediums and a poetic interpretation of time. They consider how media and communications shape our sense of self as we move through various places. Across the exhibition one will encounter various sites from the site-specificity of Omaha\, Nebraska to airports\, islands\, and ruins afar\, ranging from real to immaterial spaces. By way of ancestral mythologies\, current memories\, augmented inner monologues\, and imagined futures\, the artists bring us closer to understanding how technological clouds affect our interpersonal relationships.

Note: The Bemis Center stays open late on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.). \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition: Through collaborations with musicians\, Masch expands the possibilities of performance by making sound visible and space audible.

SUMMARY:Ezra Masch's "VOLUMES"
DESCRIPTION:Ezra Masch’s “VOLUMES” is an immersive audio-visual performance that reimagines the relationship between sound\, light\, and architecture. The exhibit runs through May 3. Note: The Bemis Center stays open late on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.). \n\n\n\nAbout the exhibition: Through collaborations with musicians\, Masch expands the possibilities of performance by making sound visible and space audible. Featuring boundary-pushing works from the distinguished collections of Karen & Robert Duncan and Kathryn & Marc LeBaron\, this exhibition presents powerful imagery that challenges conventions\, provokes conversation\, and lingers long after viewing. The exhibition includes artworks by numerous international artists\, including Robert Mapplethorpe\, Louise Bourgeois\, Bharti Kher\, and Kehinde Wiley. \n\n\n\nNOTE: Please be advised that this exhibition contains depictions of full/partial nudity and mature themes. Parents and guardians are encouraged to preview and assess the content to decide if it aligns with what they deem appropriate for their children.
