Discovering Hollywood Candy in Omaha

When we walked into Hollywood Candy, 1209 Jackson St., for the first time with the kids, Farley paused as if to behold his childhood Xanadu. He didn’t have to say anything. I could tell he wondered if a place like this really exists in Omaha.

You need a sugar fix? This Old Market spot will do it.

And why haven’t we brought him there sooner.

I have my reasons. Sugar and my kids don’t get along.

But, for a special day out, we brought them to explore Hollywood Candy. They got a contact sugar high just on entry.

That big bear was especially of interest to the kids. I could read their minds: Is that necklace for me to eat?

They loved the place. There’s an arcade, a soda fountain and an overwhelming amount of stuff. Yes stuff. I can’t describe the amount of stuff there is.

Seriously, how neat does this place look?!

The old movie theater was too dark for them want to go in. But I thought it looked neat.

The theater runs movies all day long. Side note: If you're a Lady Gaga fan, you'll spot a piano from one of her videos near this theater.

And then there’s the old-school rides. The girl behind the counter gave Farley a nickel to ride the horse. I think he liked it. He plays it cool with expressing enjoyment.

For adults who collect things, you’ll find it there. Probably.

He has no idea who he's standing next to.

Movie, music, Pez and other random memorabilia is scattered throughout the store. There’s an antique store, as well.

Odd things to look for while you’re there:

1. The mysterious rotating door. It kinda scared the crap out of my kids (for no reason).

2. Lady Gaga’s piano

3. The Blues Brothers statues

Mooch was in heaven at Hollywood Candy.

But back to the candy. How long do you think it took each us to each pick out a piece?

  1. Tessa Genners says

Why haven’t I been to this candy store yet? I have lived in Omaha for three years now and I love when you share places like this to me.

  2. My son also gets that contact sugar high! I limit his refined sugars because he doesn’t need any help being wired.
This looks like a great time and I can imagine the hours of perusing the different aisles of candy. At least, that’s what would have happened if it were my son and I.

  3. This is one of my favorite places in Omaha. . .for my stomach and my collector’s spirit!

  4. Oh I know…that place is so fun! One of my students did a campaign for them a few years ago. I don’t think he ever pitched his ideas to them. It certainly was fun though.

  5. When I took my 3 boys last spring, it took them forever to spend their limit…next time I will go in with a “one piece” rule…I think it will speed things up a little bit. 😀
